Make Your Own Snowman Ornaments DIY

Mason jar lids for snowman ornaments DIY

These snowman ornaments DIY are so simple to make! They’re so easy to make, your kids can even help out. Start by gathering all your supplies. To make these DIY ornaments, you’ll need:

  • mason jar lid rings
  • jute twine
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun
Wrap the twine around the mason jar lids

To create the snowman effect, you’ll need two different sizes of mason jar lid rings — one wide mouth jar lid and one traditional jar lid.

Start by cutting a long piece of jute twine. Cut enough twine wrap around your mason jar lids all the way around the lid ring. Glue one end of the twine to the inside of the jar lid ring. Then begin wrapping the twine around the ring.

I found it was much easier to wrap the twine around the ring if you gather all your extra twine into a ball. The ball should be small enough to fit through the hole of the lid ring. To make the ball, just wrap the twine around your fingers and hold it in place as you wrap it around the jar lid.

Add a loop to hang the snowman ornaments on the tree

After you have the entire wring wrapped with wine, cut off any excess twine. Glue the end to the inside of the mason jar lid ring. Then, make a small loop with another piece of twine and glue it to the back of the small lid ring. That way, you can hang your snowman ornament DIY on your Christmas tree when you’re finished.

Note: If you accidentally run out of twine before you’re finished wrapping, it’s OK! Just glue the end of your twine to the inside of the lid ring, then glue the end of a new piece of twine on top. When the end is secure, continue wrapping until the whole mason jar lid wring is covered.

Turn Your Mason Jar Lids into a Snowman Ornament

Attach the mason jar lid rings together to form a snowman

When you have all your lid rings wrapped with twine, it’s time to turn them into rustic snowmen! Stack the smaller lid ring on top of the larger lid ring. Put some glue on the spot where the lid rings meet and hold them in place until the glue is dry.

Cut a piece of ribbon to make the snowman's scarf

Your rustic snowman ornaments DIY also need a scarf! To make the scarf, cut a piece of plaid ribbon to the length you need. Then, fold the ribbon in half and cut at an angle on each end to form a decorative point on each end of the scarf.

Tie the scarf on the mason jar lid snowman

Tie the plaid ribbon in place in the center of the snowman. At this point, just make sure the center connection between the two mason jar lid rings is covered with the ribbon.

Adjust the ribbon scarf on your snowman ornaments DIY

Now, cover your knot by folding the top side of the ribbon over the knot and securing it with a drop of glue. Situate the other side of the ribbon scarf to make it look like it’s blowing in the breeze, then secure it with a drop of glue, too.

I use mason jars around my house — especially as small storage in my craft room and office, so I had a ton of unused lids lying around! But, if you don’t have any extra lids at home, you can purchase a package of lids at your favorite superstore (like Walmart or Target) or order them on Amazon.
