Cold Dill Dip Recipe

Thanks to its short ingredient list, I can make this cold dill dip in minutes. The hardest part for me about this easy recipe is waiting for it to chill before digging in!

This dill dip is so simple to make because you only need a handful of supplies to whip it up. To make my fresh dill dip, I always use:

  • Cream cheese. I always start with softened cream cheese when making dip. Softening the cheese before mixing will make it much easier to stir.
  • Sour cream. I recommend using full fat sour cream, but I also use reduced fat if that’s what I have on hand. So grab whatever you have in your fridge already!
  • Green onions. Fresh green onions add tons of flavor to this dip. I make sure to finely chop them before mixing them in to keep from having large chunks of onions.
  • Fresh dill. The best way to get refreshing dill flavor is to use fresh dill. But if you don’t have any fresh dill on hand, I’ve also used dried dill to make this recipe. Keep in mind that dried dill has a stronger flavor, so you won’t need as much.
  • Garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley and salt. Add even more flavor to your dip with the help of a few dried seasonings. In addition to the fresh dill, I always add garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley to the mix. It’s a great way to punch up the flavor without the need for a ton of extra ingredients.

How to Make Dill Dip

I just love how simple it is to make this quick and easy veggie dip! When I tried it for the first time, it instantly became my new favorite snack for fresh vegetables and chips!

The first step I take to prepare this dill dip is to prep the ingredients. I always start by softening my cream cheese either by letting it sit at room temperature for around one hour or heating it in the microwave until it’s soft.

After that, I finely chop the green onions and fresh dill.

Then, I add the softened cream cheese to a bowl with the sour cream, green onion, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley.

I use a wooden spoon to stir the ingredients together until everything is well combined. After that, I cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator to chill.

I have found that it’s best to keep the dill dip in the fridge for at least one hour before serving. I have even stored the dip in the fridge overnight if needed. The longer the dip sits in the fridge, the more the flavors develop!

What To Serve with Cold Dill Dip?

This delicious cold dip goes so well with so many different snacks! I’ve served this dill dip with a variety of different dipping ingredients, including chips, veggies, and crackers.

Keep in mind that cold dip made with cream cheese is that it has a thicker consistency than warm dip. That means you need a thicker dipper to withstand the texture without breaking.

Here are a few of my favorite ideas for serving my cold cream cheese dip. My personal favorites are mini bell peppers and ridged potato chips, but this dip pairs well with any of these snacks:

Crackers

  • Ritz crackers
  • Trisciuts
  • Club crackers
  • Good Thins (corn variety)
  • Nut Thins
  • Toasteds
  • Townhouse crackers
  • Flatbread crackers

Vegetables

  • Bell pepper slices or mini bell peppers
  • Celery stalks
  • Cucumber slices
  • Baby carrots
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Carrot sticks

Chips

  • Tortilla chips
  • Corn chips
  • Ridged potato chips
  • Pita chips
  • Bagel chips
  • Pretzel chips

One of my favorite parts about making dip is that I can customize it for different get-togethers. Here are some of my favorite substitutions and additions I’ve made to this basic dill dip recipe:

  • Add some chopped pickles. This is by far my favorite way to change up this recipe. Stir in some finely chopped dill pickles to add extra crunch and dill flavor!
  • Increase the amount of sour cream and decrease the amount of cheese. The consistency of this dip is pretty thick, so when I want a creamier dip for chips, this is what I do. Half the amount of cream cheese and double the amount of sour cream. This will result in a creamier texture, perfect for dipping without breaking my chips.
  • Add shredded cheese. When I want cheesier flavor in my dip, shredded cheese is my go-to. Cheddar cheese works will with this dip, along with parmesan or mozzarella.
  • Mix in some ranch seasoning. Another simple way I like to change up the flavor in my dill dip is to add a tablespoon or two of ranch seasoning. Don’t add too much, though! I mixed in a whole packet one time and it completely overpowered the dill flavor in the dip!

How Long is Cold Dill Dip Good for in the Refrigerator?

Since this dip is made with cream cheese and sour cream, the longest I would recommend letting this dip sit out is two hours after you serve it. After that, I make sure to transfer the dip back to the refrigerator until I’m ready to eat it again.

Before placing the dill dip in the fridge, I cover the serving bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the leftovers to an airtight container to keep the cream cheese from hardening. I have found that the dip stays good in the fridge for up to three days. And I always make sure to stir the dip again before serving it.
