Paper Plate Suncatcher Craft

This colorful paper plate craft is so simple to make, which means it’s a great option for entertaining kids at a birthday party or keeping the kids occupied on a lazy afternoon.

But the best part about this simple DIY is that you need just handful of supplies you probably have laying around the house right now to make it. And if there’s something on the list that you don’t have, you can grab it at Dollar Tree!

Here’s what you need to make your own paper plate donuts with your kids:

• Paper plates. You can use any type or size of paper plates to create your suncatcher craft with your kids. I used some extra party plates I had laying around. But regular paper plates are also a great option!
• Coffee filter. The magic of this fun craft happens when you use a coffee filter! You’ll need a white coffee filter to get the best results when making your suncatchers at home.
• Markers. To add the tie dye effect to the center of your suncatchers, your kids will start by using markers. Water-based markers are the best option. But you can still get a similar effect with other types of markers, too.
• Water and a paint brush. Finish creating your colorful suncatcher with some water. Simply brush the water over the markers and watch the magic happen!

How to Make a Paper Plate Suncatcher

Now that you have all your supplies gathered up, it’s time to get crafty! Have some fun with your kids making your own suncatcher DIY at home or in the classroom by following these easy instructions.

The first step to turning your coffee filter and paper plate into a cool suncatcher is to draw some designs on a coffee filter. Remind your kids that the colors will bleed once the water is applied, so I wouldn’t suggest drawing pictures on the filter. Simply doodle or scribble different colors all over the filter.

After that, your kids can grab their paint brushes. Place the coffee filter on top of a plate that you don’t mind getting messy. (If you’re using water-based markers, the color should wash off without issue). Then, pour some water into a small cup.

Dip the brush into the water and paint it over the top of the markers. Continue adding water to the filter until the colors begin to bleed together.

Once the entire coffee filter is saturated, set it aside and allow it to dry completely. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process if you want!

While you’re waiting for your coffee filter to dry, cut the center out of two plates. I found it’s easier to fold the plate in half and cut a semi-circle out of the center of each plate.

Then, place the coffee filter on top of one of the plates and trim the edges, if needed. After that, use tape or glue to attach the coffee filter to the plate.

After that, place the second plate on top of the coffee filter. Use glue or tape to hold the plate in place on top.

To hang your suncatcher, you can attach a loop of ribbon or string to the top! Then, hang the suncatcher in the window to see all the colors shine through!
