Finding quick and easy food for your kid’s birthday party is a must! And it doesn’t get much simpler than these marshmallow flower cupcakes! With the help of a handful of simple supplies, you can easily decorate some adorable party treats — no special skills required!
Easy Flower Cupcakes
You’re going to love just how simple these fun flower cupcakes are to make! That’s because there’s no special decorating skills needed.

When you’re searching for cake ideas for a kid’s birthday party, cupcakes are the way to go! They’re quick and easy to make, and so much simpler to decorate than a full cake. To make these pretty spring birthday cupcakes, you’ll need:
- Cupcakes. I used a boxed cake mix to make the cupcakes, but you could also use store-bought cupcakes for this quick party idea.
- Icing. You’ll need white icing to hold the flower petals in place. You can bar a jar of premade frosting or make your own from scratch.
- Marshmallows. Turn your plain cupcakes into pretty blooms with the help of some marshmallows! The marshmallows will make the petals of your flowers.
- Green melting chocolate. Add leaves to your flowers by creating some chocolate decorations using green melting candy. You can find this ingredient in the cake decorating aisle of Wal-Mart.
- Sanding sugar sprinkles. Add a pop of color and some sparkle to your flower petals with sanding sugar. You can use any color you want, but I stuck with spring colors like pink, purple, and yellow.
How to Decorate Flower Cupcakes
The key to making these easy flower treats is the easy flower decorations on top. Just follow the easy instructions below to decorate your own flower cupcakes at home.

Start by melting the green candy according to the instructions on the package. Once the candy is melted, transfer it to a piping bag and pipe leaf shapes onto a piece of parchment paper. Then, set the leaves aside to harden while you decorate the cupcakes.
You’ll need two petals per cupcake, but I suggest making several extras. The thin chocolate breaks easily, so you may need to replace some of the leaves as you’re adding them to the flowers.

Once your cupcakes are finished baking, allow them to cool completely. Then, spread a thin layer of icing over the top of each cupcake.

Pour each color of sprinkles into a small bowl. Cut your marshmallows in half and dip the sticky side of the marshmallow half into the sprinkles. Lightly press it into the sugar until the sticky part is fully coated with sprinkles.

Continue dipping the marshmallow halves into the sprinkles until you have 7 to 8 petals per cupcake. Start by arranging 4 to 5 petals in a circle around the top of the cupcake, pressing the marshmallows into the icing to hold them in place.

Then, place three marshmallow petals on top of the cupcake to finish decorating each treat with flower petals.

Once the flower petals are in place, press two chocolate leaves into the side of each cupcake. Be careful as you press the leaves into place because they will break easily!
Flower Cupcake Ideas
These colorful marshmallow pieces are perfect for decorating your flower cupcakes! But they’re not the only way you can create adorable flower cupcakes for your party!

Instead of using marshmallows to decorate the cupcakes for your spring birthday party, try using one of these flower cupcake ideas instead:
- Use colorful sprinkles instead of sanding sugar to decorate your marshmallow flower petals
- Decorate the top of your cupcake with spring M&Ms to make the petals for your flowers
- Use flower piping tips to decorate your flower cupcakes with icing
- Top your cupcakes with flower cupcake toppers
- Use edible flowers to decorate your party treats
- Make chocolate cupcake toppers using a flower candy mold
Flower Cupcake Recipe
Decorate some beautiful flower cupcakes using marshmallows and sprinkles with this easy dessert idea.
Ingredients
- 1 15.25 ounce box white cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare it
- 1 cup green candy melts
- 1 16-ounce container white icing
- 35 marshmallows
- Sanding sugar (I used pink, yellow, and purple)
Instructions
- Prepare the white cake mix according to the instructions on the box and bake 22 cupcakes. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely.
- While the cupcakes are cooling, follow the instructions on the bag to melt the green candy, then transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bag. Cut the tip off the piping bag and draw 44 leaf shapes on a piece of wax or parchment paper. Place the chocolate leaves in the refrigerator to harden while you decorate the cupcakes.
- Spread a thin layer of white icing over the top of each cooled cupcake using a flat spatula.
- To make the petals for your flower cupcake toppers, cut each marshmallow into three pieces. Pour the sanding sugar into small bowls and dip the sticky part of the marshmallow into the sugar until it’s fully coated.
- Press four to five (depending on how big your cupcakes are) petals into the top of your cupcake, then arrange three petals on top of
the bottom row of petals. Use additional icing on the bottom of the top petals, if needed, to secure them in place. - Finish decorating your cupcakes by pushing two chocolate leaves into the side of each flower before serving.
