For my little one’s first birthday, we used Curious George as the theme because he just LOVES George! When I decided on the theme, I started scouring yard sales for cheap Curious George books because I knew I would make use of the book’s pages in a variety of ways for the party. One of my favorite handmade decorations was my banner made out of book pages.

This Curious George birthday banner was super simple to make and it made a huge impact. I got so many compliments on it at the party! And the best part is that it cost less than one dollar to make and only took about 15 minutes to put together!

To make this banner, I used the book “Curious George,” which was the first George book ever written. I love this particular book because it’s larger than most of the other Curious George books and the pictures are a little brighter and more vivid. It also has a ton of different scenes, including a few fun ones with George holding balloons — perfect for a birthday party! I found a paperback copy at a yard sale for 25 cents, but if you can’t find a cheap used copy, Amazon has the book for around $6.

In addition to your Curious George book, you’ll also need a few other craft supplies. You’ll need:

  • Twine or ribbon. To turn your book pages into a cute Curious George banner, you’ll need to attach the bunting pieces to something. I used red and white twine to hold my banner together, but a piece of ribbon will work, too.
  • Ruler. Make sure to cut each of your banner pieces the same size with the help of a ruler. Use your ruler to draw cut lines on each page so you know exactly where to cut to make your banner pieces look amazing.
  • Scissors. Sharp scissors are a must! Use the best scissors you have on hand to get a clean cut on each of your banner pieces.
  • Glue. Attach the banner pages to the twine with glue. I used my hot glue gun to create the banner to be sure it held up during the party.

To start, I measured my table and cut a string long enough to allow a little slack between each end. Then, I calculated how many book pages I would need on my banner and tore out that many pages from the book. I used a ruler to draw a triangle starting at each corner and meeting in the bottom middle of the page. I cut out one page to use as a guide for the rest of the pages.

To make things a little quicker, I traced the first triangle on a group of other pages and taped the sides together to keep them from sliding. Then, I cut out the rest of the pieces of the banner out of book pages at one time. That made things go pretty quickly!

The last step in making a banner out of book pages is to glue the book page banner to the string. I used my hot glue gun to attach the string to the back of each piece of the banner out of book pages. I then gave it plenty of time to cool before packing it up to take to the party. Once we arrived at the party, I attached the banner to the tablecloth using safety pins. I attached the pins to the tablecloth in each corner, then tied the string to the pin. The pin holding up the banner out of book pages was covered by a couple of large tissue paper flowers.

You can use this Curious George banner in a variety of different ways at your party! In addition to decorating your table, you could create a backdrop with your banner by hanging it on the wall behind your food table. Or decorate the space around your party by hanging the banner from tree to tree in your yard.
