BBQ bacon meatballs

I have always loved meatballs, but most traditional meatball recipes aren’t gluten free. That’s because they typically use breadcrumbs to bind the meatballs and help them stick together while they cook.

That’s why it’s always so hard to find good frozen meatballs that are also gluten free. But I have some good news for you! I have a few different options for making quick and easy meatballs without worrying about the breadcrumbs.

  • Frozen meatballs: Try using one of the frozen gluten free meatball brands below for your BBQ meatballs.
  • Gluten free meatball recipe: Use this easy meatball recipe with gluten free breadcrumbs, then add the bacon and BBQ sauce.
  • Meatbals with no breadcrumbs: Or make this meatball recipe with no breadcrumbs as the base for this simple barbeque appetizer.

How to Make Gluten Free BBQ Meatballs

BBq meatballs with bacon

To make this simple recipe for gluten free barbeque meatballs, you’ll need just three ingredients:

  • Meatballs. The most important part of this recipe is the meatballs. I used Farm Rich 100% Beef frozen meatballs for this recipe to make it super easy. You can also use a from-scratch meatball recipe (scroll up to get two of my favorite recipes — one with gluten free breadcrumbs and one with no breadcrumbs).
  • Bacon. The type of bacon you use to wrap your meatballs is up to you. I suggest a thinner cut of bacon to ensure it gets crispy as it bakes.
  • BBQ sauce. Again, the type of sauce you use is up to you! I used Sweet Baby Ray’s original flavor for my bacon wrapped meatballs.

After gathering up your ingredients, you’ll just need a few minutes of prep work to get started on this easy recipe. The first thing you’ll need to do is slice your bacon strips into thirds. Then, if you’re making your meatballs from scratch, prepare them according to the recipe instructions.

After your meatballs are ready, wrap each meatball in bacon, If you’re using frozen meatballs, there’s no need to thaw them before wrapping.

Place each bacon wrapped meatball on top of a wire rack on a large baking sheet. This will help the bacon crisp as it cooks and keep your meatballs from getting too greasy.

Bake the meatballs in the oven for 15 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven. Brush each meatball with BBQ sauce until they’re all fully covered. Then, return the pan to the oven to cook for an additional 10 minutes.

If the bacon isn’t fully crisp when the cook time is up, turn on the broiler and cook for two to three minutes. Keep an eye on your meatballs while they’re under the broiler to preven them from burning.

Questions About Barbeque Meatballs

While these BBQ meatballs are simple to make, sometimes questions arise about the recipe and the ingredients. Here are the answers to some common questions about making your own gluten free meatballs.

Where can I find frozen gluten free meatballs?

I was able to find my Farm Rich frozen meatballs at Kroger, but you can also find all three gluten free brands (Farm Rich, Rosina, and Cooked Perfect) at Wal-Mart. You’ll need to check your store to see if they’re available in your area. You can also find gluten free frozen meatballs at Aldi. The store’s Bremer frozen meatballs are made with no gluten containing ingredients.

Can I cook these meatballs in the slow cooker?

I don’t think this recipe would work in the slow cooker. The bacon wouldn’t get crispy as it cooks, like it does in the oven. But if you leave the bacon out, you could easily make BBQ meatballs in the slow cooker. Just add the meatballs to the bowl and top them with BBQ sauce.

  1. If you make your own meatballs instead of using frozen, do you have to pre-cook the meatballs before wrapping in bacon and baking?

    1. No. The meatballs don’t need to be precooked. I would just wrap them in bacon right after rolling them and bake them according to the instructions in your meatball recipe.
