These Elf Hat Bugles are an easy, fun recipe that kids will love helping make. The combination of crispy Bugles and sweet candy coating makes them one of the best holiday snacks you can serve or gift this season.
Elf Hat Bugles
This recipe is simple, fast, and requires no baking — perfect for busy holiday days. The treats are colorful and customizable, making them an excellent snack mix idea, gift idea, or fun party food. Plus, kids love helping decorate their own little Buddy the Elf hats with candy feathers, making it a memorable holiday activity for the whole family.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your Elf Hat Bugles:
- Bugles corn chips – the crunchy base for each elf hat.
- Green candy melts – coat the Bugles for the signature elf hat color.
- Yellow candy melts – for the decorative hat band.
- Red candy melts – for the little festive feather detail.
Optional: Use a small piping bag or a zip-top bag with the corner cut for decorating.
How to Make Elf Hat Bugles
Transform your Bugles into a Buddy the Elf inspired snack for your Christmas movie night with these quick and easy no-bake instructions!

Start by melting the green candy melts in the microwave according to the package instructions.
Once the candy is ready, dip each Bugle into the candy coating until it’s fully covered. Then, use a fork to remove the Bugle from the chocolate. Lightly tap the handle of the fork on the side of the bowl to help remove the extra chocolate from the chip.

Place the green Bugles on a piece of parchment paper and allow them to harden. You can also use waxed paper to allow the chocolate pieces to set. Either type of paper will work to keep the melted chocolate from sticking to the surface.

Next, melt the yellow candy and transfer it to a piping bag. Pipe a thin line along the bottom of each green Bugle to create the hatband.
After that, melt the red candy and transfer it to a piping bag. Pipe a small red feather on the side of each hat for that classic Buddy the Elf look.
Allow the yellow and red candy decorations to cool and harden completely before serving.
Elf Hat Bugle Ideas
These Elf Hat Bugles are not only a festive treat for the holidays but also a fun and easy activity for kids. Whether for a gift idea, classroom party food, or a simple snack mix, they’re guaranteed to bring a smile to every holiday celebration.

One of the best parts about this recipe is how easy it is to customize. Try these recipe ideas as you’re making your own chocolate covered Bugles:
- Use waffle cone pieces. For a sweet treat without the salty center, swap the Bugles for waffle cone pieces.
- Add more chocolate. For an extra sweet twist, try filling the inside of the Bugle in melted chocolate before coating it with the candy.
- Make a Elf snack mix. These elf hats also make a fun addition to a Christmas snack mix when paired with popcorn, pretzels, and red and green M&Ms.
How Do I Store Elf Hat Bugles?
These treats can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. It’s best to avoid refrigerating them, since condensation can cause the candy coating to become sticky. If you’re planning a party, you can prepare them a couple of days ahead of time and they’ll still look and taste great.
Where can I find Bugles?
Bugles are available in most grocery stores near the chips and snack foods. The plain version works best for this recipe.
Can kids help make these?
Absolutely! Kids can help dip the Bugles and decorate with sprinkles (adult supervision recommended when working with melted candy).
Are These Elf Hats Gluten Free?
While Bugles are made without gluten-containing ingredients, they are prepared in a facility that also processes wheat. Since there’s a risk of cross-contamination, they are NOT gluten free. As far as I know, there is no gluten-free alternative for these corn chips.
