DIY Curious George Cake Topper

Cake buntings are such a fun way to decorate the top of a birthday cake! Since my son was having a Curious George party, I knew I had to make his bunting cake decoration out of book pages. This simple DIY Curious George cake topper makes a plain cake look so adorable — and it’s so simple to make. All you need is some string, an old book, and some glue!

When I decided to have a Curious George party for my son’s first birthday, I started searching for Curious George books at yard sales because I knew I would need them for decorations. One of the projects I used the book pages in was my book page banner that I used on the food tables. I also used pages from the Curious George books to create this cute bunting Curious George birthday cake topper.

How to Make a Curious George Cake Topper

To make your own Curious George cake decoration, you’ll just need a handful of supplies! To put this easy party craft together, you’ll need:

• Curious George books. I found old Curious George books at yard sales as I was preparing for the party. But you can purchase books for your cake topper online at Amazon. You can get a set of Curious George books for under $10!
• Washi tape. To accent the spaces between the book pages, I used red and yellow polka dot washi tape. Use any color or design you want to accent your own cake topper bunting.
• Twine. Hang the bunting over your cake by decorating a piece of twine with the Curious George book pages and washi tape. You can find colorful twine like the one I used at Dollar Tree.
• Sticks. The last element you’ll need for your DIY cake topper is sticks to hold the bunting in place. I used bamboo kabob sticks for my cake topper.

In addition to the supplies you’ll need to decorate your cake topper bunting, you’ll also need a ruler and hot glue gun to make your bunting. This simple project only took about 15 minutes and add such an impact to my simple cake! Which is great, because I’m not much of a cake decorator!

The best part about this simple bunting cake topper out of book pages is that it uses things you can buy at any craft store. And if you’re a crafter like me, you probably already have most of the items lying around your house. The only problem you may have is the fact that you have to destroy a perfectly good book. To make this a little easier on myself, I made sure to find some super cheap used books to make all the decorations for the party. I didn’t pay more than a quarter for any of these books, so I didn’t feel so bad ripping the pages out to use them for crafts!

To make this cute bunting cake topper out of book pages, you’ll need to cut your book pages for the banner. I made each flag an inch wide and an inch and a half tall. I measured each flag and marked them out on the page so I could tell where I was cutting and make sure I was getting a good picture of George on each flag. Then, I cut out each rectangle and made a little triangle on the bottom of each of them to make it look like a flag.

The Curious George cake topper was made on a base of twine ribbon and two kabob sticks. So I started putting the project together by stringing the ribbon between each of the sticks. I put a dot of hot glue on each spot where I wanted the string to stay in place and wrapped the string a few times around the stick. Then, I started adding the flags. In between each Curious George flag, I placed a flag out of washi tape, alternating between the two main colors of my party — red and yellow. To make these flags, I just folded a piece of tape over the top of the string, then cut a triangle out of the bottom.

After adding all of the tape flags, I stuck the Curious George flags in between each of them. To secure the book page flags, I folded the top of the book page flags over the string and put a few dots of hot glue to keep each flag in place.

To place the bunting cake topper out of book pages on the cake, stretch the sticks apart so the strings are taut and slide each stick into the cake. To add a little extra decoration to the top of my Curious George cake, I found this cute plastic cake topper, which was the perfect addition to my adorable bunting cake topper out of book pages!
