To make your own paper plate jack o lantern, you’ll need a few simple craft supplies. Put together this Halloween craft at home with these supplies:

  • Paper plates. You can purchase orange colored paper plates at Dollar Tree or paint plain white plates orange to give them a pumpkin look. We used small 6-inch paper plates to make our pumpkins, but full-sized plates would also work!
  • Printer and cardstock. To give your pumpkin craft a face, you’ll need to download my printable template. Once you download the face, print it out on cardstock!
  • Scissors and glue. To put the craft together, you’ll need a pair of scissors to cut out the template and some glue to attach all the pieces.

Start by flipping the paper plate over so it’s upside down. Then, use orange paint to coat the entire plate. We used orange acrylic paint to paint our pumpkins and it took two coats of paint to fully cover the plate.

While you’re waiting for the paint to dry on your paper plate, you can cut out the template pieces for your jack o lantern craft. Cut out each piece around the outer edge for your younger kids. Or let your older kids practice their cutting skills by giving them the chance to cut out each piece on their own.

After all the pieces are cut out and the paint is completely dry, you can start assembling your pumpkin! Start by placing the pieces of the face in the correct spots on top of the paper plate.

What’s so much fun about this cute craft is that you can easily make it your own! Consider these simple tips to create an amazing Dollar Tree Halloween craft at home with your kids this fall.

  • Use orange paper plates. If you take a look in the party aisle at Dollar Tree, you’ll probably find a package of orange paper plates. Skip the mess of painting and use orange plates to make your jack o lanterns instead!
  • Make it with large paper plates. We made our pumpkins using small paper plates because that’s what we had on hand. But if you want to create a large pumpkin, you can also use full sized paper plates instead.
  • Make a paper plate pumpkin. This Halloween craft could easily be turned into a fall art project. After you paint your paper plate, simply leave off the Jack o Lantern face. Just attach the stem and leaf on top to make a plain pumpkin.
