Supplies for Your Twine Wrapped Mason Jars

To create these rustic farmhouse planters, you’ll need:

  • Mason jars
  • Chalk paint
  • Sanding block
  • Jute twine
  • Buffalo check ribbon
  • Hot glue gun

These DIY painted mason jars are not only so simple to make, but they’re also one of the easiest ways to decorate your home! Once you make them, you can place them just about anywhere to instantly add some farmhouse charm to the space.

How to Paint a Mason Jar

The hardest part about this DIY project is painting your mason jars. The reason this step of the craft project is a little more difficult is because you need a particular kind of paint to paint your jars. Since mason jars are made of smooth glass, traditional craft paint won’t work. If you’ve ever tried to paint your jars with acrylic paint, you were probably left with a streaky mess.

But if you use chalk paint to paint your jars, you’ll end up with some beautiful rustic mason jars perfect for decorating! So, to start make sure you have chalk paint. You can get chalk paint just about anywhere. For this project, I used Waverly chalk paint from Wal-Mart and I love it!

After finding the right paint, just use a foam paint brush to brush the chalk paint onto the mason jar. Continue adding coats until you’re satisfied with the coverage, then allow the paint to dry completely.

To give your painted mason jars a distressed look, grab a fine grit sanding block and sand around the edges of the jar, as well as around the designs in the jar, to age the paint and make it look a little more antiqued.

How to Tie Jute Around a Mason Jar

Twine and mason jars go hand in hand, in my opinion. But if you’ve never decorated a mason jar with jute twine, you may be wondering how to tie a twine bow on a mason jar. It’s actually very easy! There are two basic methods for how to tie jute around a mason jar:

  • Wrapping the twine tightly without securing it — best for decorating mason jars temporarily
  • Wrapping twine around mason jars and securing it in place with glue — best for decorating mason jars with twine permanently

First, I’ll tell you how to tie a bow on a mason jar without securing it in place. This method works great for decorating a mason jar that you may want to use for other purposes later. To do this, you’ll wrap the twine around the jar tightly and tie a tight bow in the front to keep the twine from slipping down the jar. Start by folding the jute twine in half and placing the center of the twine on the back of the mason jar. Hold the twine in place as you pull the two ends to the front of the jar, then twist them in front. Wrap the ends toward the back of the jar and twist them at the back. Continue this process until you have just enough twine left at the front of the bar to tie a twine bow around the mason jar.

Another method for wrapping twine around mason jars is to use glue to hold the twine in place. If you plan on decorating with the twine wrapped mason jar permenantly, this is the best option for decorating your mason jars with twine. Start by putting a line of hot glue along the back of the jar. Then, wrap the jar with the twine according to the instructions above. The line of glue will secure the first wrap of twine to the jar, while the rest of the glue line will keep the twine from slipping down the jar.

But decorating a mason jar with just twine may not be enough to make your rustic twine wrapped jars blend with the rest of your DIY farmhouse decor. I wanted to add these mason jar planters to my display with my buffalo check farmhouse candles, so I added a little bit of buffalo check ribbon to the jars too.

To decorate your mason jars with ribbon and twine, start by wrapping the ribbon around the jar. Secure each of the ends of ribbon with glue to hold it in place. Then, wrap a section of twine around the top border of the ribbon. And add another section of twine around the bottom border of the ribbon.
