While I don’t force my kids to keep learning over the summer, I do try to work in a few educational activities to keep them entertained. I fully believe that kids need a break from the stresses of school during the summer months, so no worksheets or flashcards! But that doesn’t mean they’re not learning during summer break. Along with plenty of reading, I also like to incorporate some easy STEM activities into our day on occasion.
And this messy shaving cream rain experiment fits the bill perfectly. In addition to having fun making a mess with colored water and shaving cream, your kids will also be learning how clouds make rain! So, what are you waiting for? Grab these materials and get started:
- Clear glass jar or cup
- Squirt bottle
- Water
- Shaving cream

Prep Your Shaving Cream Experiment
Making rain with shaving cream is so simple! Start by preparing your jar and water for the shaving cream experiment. Fill your clear glass jar or cup almost all the way full with water, leaving around an inch of space at the top of the glass. Next, fill a plastic squirt bottle with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Secure the lid and hold your finger over the hole on the top, then shake the squirt bottle to mix the water and food coloring together.
The next step for your shaving cream rain could experiment is to grab your shaving cream and spray a “cloud” of shaving cream on top of the water, making sure to overfill the cup so the cloud extends over the top of the glass. This one messy component of this shaving cream experiment your kids will love!
How Clouds Make Rain
Now it’s time for the fun part of this making rain science experiment — learning how clouds make rain! Have your child carefully hold the squirt bottle over the shaving cream rain cloud, placing the end of the cap into the cloud. Then, let them slowly squeeze water into the cloud.
If they use light pressure on the bottle, they’ll notice a light “rain” inside the jar. But if they fully squeeze, they can see a heavy “rain” start to come down! Look at that orange storm we had going in our rain cloud in a jar!
The Science Behind This How Clouds Make Rain Shaving Cream Experiment
This fun shaving cream experiment is a great way to teach kids how clouds make rain. To explain this shaving cream rain cloud experiment to your kids, equate the colored water to the air and the shaving cream to a cloud. As the clouds become more saturated with water, they produce rain. So, the more colored water that goes into the shaving cream cloud, the more “rain” will work its way through the cloud and into the jar below.

Oooooh. There’s also a neat experiment where you can create a cloud in a jar. You could do that earlier to explain why the cloud forms and the vapor joins with it.
