DIY Cleaning Products with Essential Oils
Spring is just around the corner and the weather here is finally starting to show it! It’s been raining for days in Illinois, which make it the perfect time for me to start Spring cleaning. I’ve been making my own DIY cleaning products with essential oils for a while now, so I thought I’d share my recipes just in time for Spring cleaning season! Keep reading to learn how to make your own DIY cleaning products and score some beautiful labels for your spray bottles.

To make Spring cleaning a little easier on me this year, I headed over to Dollar Tree to gather some supplies for an easy-to-carry Spring cleaning tote filled with everything I’ll need to clean each room of my house. I grabbed some spray bottles for my DIY cleaning products, sponges, scrub brushes, plastic gloves, and a handy basket to carry everything room to room. The best part is that everything was only $1 each, which made this awesome cleaning basket super cheap!
Here’s what you’ll need:

When I got all the supplies for my cleaning tote at Dollar Tree, I also grabbed some of the basic ingredients for my DIY cleaning products too. I was able to get some vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and Dawn. In fact, the only ingredients I wasn’t able to get at my local Dollar Tree was Borax and essential oils.
The first DIY cleaning product I made was my multi-purpose cleaner. This cleaner is great for cleaning almost anything. I use it in my kitchen and to clean most solid surfaces around the house. To make this multi-purpose cleaner, mix one cup vinegar, one cup hydrogen peroxide, one small squirt of Dawn, and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. I usually use a mixture of five drops orange or lemon with five drops tea tree. Finally, fill the spray bottle the rest of the way with warm water and give it a good shake to mix everything up.
Lemon oil and orange oil both create a clean scent to mask some of the vinegar smell. Additionally, both oils are great at fighting grease, and lemon oil is naturally antibacterial and anti fungal. Tea tree oil is also an awesome germ- and bacteria-fighter, and as an added bonus — bugs hate the smell of tea tree oil!
Another DIY cleaning product in my Spring cleaning tote is fabric refresher. To make my homemade Febreze, I mix one cup vinegar, one cup rubbing alcohol, 10 drops lavender essential oil, and 10 drops tea tree essential oil, then finish by filling the rest of the bottle with water. The vinegar and rubbing alcohol work to deodorize your fabric and the essential oil leaves a lovely smell wherever you spray it.
In addition to having a great smell, lavender oil pairs well with vinegar and has naturally antibacterial properties.
I also make my own glass cleaner using 1/4 cup of ammonia, one cup of rubbing alcohol, one drop of Dawn, and fill the remaining space with water. The combination of ammonia and rubbing alcohol make this glass cleaner streak free and just as good as Windex. To get a super-clean window, I suggest spraying this DIY cleaning product on the glass, then using a squeegee to remove it.
The final DIY cleaning product in my Spring cleaning basket is my carpet deodorizer. To make this DIY cleaning product, mix one cup baking soda, one cup Borax, and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (I use a combination of lavender and tea tree for this one as well). I put all the ingredients in a mason jar, screw the lid on tight, and shake as hard as you can. The goal of this is to get the oils completely mixed into the dry ingredients.
To use, sprinkle the deodorizer all over your carpet, then let it sit for about 30 minutes to allow the baking soda to soak in any yucky smells from the carpet. Finally, vacuum the carpet to remove all of the product and enjoy the lovely smell that remains!
